Nearly 30 years ago, AYS began with the hope of keeping the children of working parents safe during the out-of-school hours. I am proud to say that the agency has grown from one after-school program at IPS #70 to 45 programs in five Central Indiana counties. During the school year, we serve approximately 1,500 children each year. Around 500 children participate in AYS summer programs.
While safety is still at the heart of our programs, we have worked to add structured, educational curricula while still allowing children to socialize with their peers. We have a special focus on arts, health and multicultural enrichment. We have had the opportunity to offer a variety of special projects through the generous funding of foundations in the community.
At AYS, we value diversity and inclusion. Children in the programs reflect the demographics of the community. All economic levels are represented, including children who receive financial assistance from AYS or government vouchers. One of our primary fundraising goals is to increase the capacity of our Financial Assistance Fund, which provides scholarships for children to attend our programs.
AYS could not operate without the support of families, staff members, board members, community groups, businesses and individuals. We all work together to provide safe, enriching opportunities for children in Central Indiana.
