AYS (At Your School), Inc., has recently been sited for its quality programs through the receipt of several awards and grant funding. On July 6, Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson will present the Character Achievement Award to the non-profit agency, which operates before- and after-school, kindergarten wrap-around, early childhood and summer programs in Marion, Hamilton, Hendricks, and North Montgomery counties.

AYS’ Peace Posse Violence Prevention Initiative was nominated for the award. The initiative, implemented at AYS’ eight Washington Township school-aged programs, focuses on increasing self-esteem, self-awareness, and conflict resolution skills in order to reduce the occurrence of bullying and other violent behaviors. The initiative began in the 2005-2006 school year and will be introduced into other AYS programs in the future.

The United Way of Central Indiana will present an Agency Diversity Award to AYS at an awards ceremony on July 15. The United Way awards member agencies for their ability to reach diverse clients.

AYS also received several grant awards in June. On June 20, Arts Council of Indianapolis and the City of Indianapolis announced its funding recipients, including $5,000 for AYS’ arts enrichment project. Soon thereafter AYS received $50,000 from Lilly Endowment Inc. for an extensive strategic planning and capacity building initiative. AYS will also receive $2,500 worth of in-kind printing through Printing Partners’ grant program.

“I am encouraged that AYS initiatives are being recognized by the Mayor of Indianapolis, United Way and community agencies and businesses,” AYS President/CEO Ellen Clippinger said. “AYS staff works diligently to develop program curriculum initiatives that are fun, engaging, and educational. Their efforts are recognized in the awards and grants recently received. AYS appreciates the support of the community as it continues its mission of helping families have safe, enriching after-school programs for their children.”
