AYS at Spring Mill Elementary in Washington Township celebrated their four-legged friends with the theme Our Pets from April 26 through May 7. In addition to pet-oriented crafts, science, math and language arts activities, the program site made dog treats and collected items for the Humane Society of Indianapolis.
Families and staff collected items for the Humane Society such as bleach, pens, can openers, towels, and canned cat and dog food. The children also spent three days making three gallon-sized bags of peanut butter dog biscuits.
A Humane Society representative visited the AYS site to talk to the children about the organization and animal safety. The representative brought with her a dog and three 5/6-week-old kittens from the Humane Society. The children also had the opportunity to pet the animals.
