Three
AYS administrative staff members attended the INShape Indiana 2005 Health Summit
on October 27 to gather information, resources and contacts for the second year
of the AYS Stepping UP Wellness Initiative. Speakers included race car driver
and Vice Chair of the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Lyn St.
James, Indiana State Health Commissioner Judith Monroe MD, and Governor Mitch
Daniels. Exhibitors included the American Association of Pediatricians, Action
for Healthy Kids, Fit City, and many others. The full-day event was an opportunity
for individuals from a variety of backgrounds to share ideas on how to create
a healthier Indiana.
AYS
has already implemented one idea brought to the Summit. As part of the "INShape
Trailblazers," Community Health Network's Sherry McIntyre presented her "Fit
for Life" challenge. The challenge has been used in her church, based on
point values for certain healthy choices.
Anthem Blue Cross
and Blue Shield in Indiana has given AYS funds to start a similar
challenge for all staff members. Beginning November 14, employees will form teams
and track their daily activity, water intake, smoking, and fruit and vegetable
consumption. Awards will be given to the teams with the most overall points and
points in each category. Free health screenings, including cholesterol, glucose,
blood pressure, and BMI will also be available for employees. Healthier employees
lead to lower insurance premiums, a reduction in sick leave and disability, and
stronger role models for the students in AYS programs.
