AYS
has collaborated with the IUPUI School of Nursing to have five pre-nursing student
volunteers. The five students are fulfilling their service learning requirements
by volunteering with AYS for 15 hours. The students are delivering the Indiana
State Department of Healths Jump Kids Jump and Marion County Health Departments
Kids Cook curricula to several AYS programs.
The
AYS nurse consultant began visiting programs last school year to deliver the curricula
in conjunction with AYS Stepping Up Wellness Initiative. While the curricula
targets third through fifth grade students, all school-agers can gain some benefits
from the programs. The student volunteers allow the curricula to be delivered
to more AYS programs.
Jump
Kids Jump focuses on osteoporosis prevention. Activities like jump roping increase
bone density and can be a deterrent of osteoporosis. Prior to learning new jump
roping techniques, children are tested on calcium and bone health. Following a
presentation on calcium, the children take the same test to determine how much
they have learned. Last year, pre-test scores averaged 68% and post-test scores
averaged 82%.
The
Kids Cook program teaches the children about proper nutrition and allows them
the opportunity to create their own healthy snacks.
