Mayor Bart Peterson presented AYS with the Mayors Character Achievement
Award in a ceremony attended by AYS staff members, board members, children, and
parents, as well as other community groups. The award recognizes AYS Peace
Posse Violence Prevention Initiative in AYS Washington Township after-school
programs.
AYS
Program Director Lisa Murrell facilitated the initiative in the eight school-aged
programs during the 2005-2006 school year. Students learned conflict resolution
skills, participated in self-esteem building activities, and learned more about
themselves and others. The initiative used role-playing, games, videos, visual
arts and group discussions. Directors of each program received a resource manual
so that each Peace Posse could continue to meet throughout the school
year. AYS Nurse Consultant Jill Taylor also presented drug and alcohol abuse prevention
curriculum through the initiative.
In
Mayor Petersons remarks, he called for the word peace to be
integrated into everyday vocabulary. He cited the city's trouble with crime and
violence this year and called on agencies like AYS to evoke positive attitudes
in young children, so they may grow to be productive and healthy members of the
community. A special guest, Christamore House Executive Director Olgen Williams,
also offered his insights on violence and peace in our community. The Christamore
House is sponsoring a Peace in the Streets rally July 18th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM
on Monument Circle.
