AYS
Staff Member Receives Education Award
On
September 6, AYS Tom Tate received a 2007 Excellence in Summer Service Education
Award. Tom was one of twenty young people to receive the award out of 65 applicants.
Eligibility requirements included being 16-22 years old, working at least 25 hours
per week at a program funded by the Summer Youth Program Fund, and being recommended
by a supervisor.
Tom
has worked for AYS for four years in Washington Township AYS programs. Before
becoming an employee, Tom participated in Camp AYS for several years as a camper.
A 2007 Bishop Chatard High School graduate, he is now attending Tri-State University
and will pursue a sports management degree. After college, he hopes to coach basketball
at the high school or college level and start a basketball league for 8-18 year
olds.
When
asked on his award application why summer youth programs are important for Marion
County youth, Tom responded, I believe that summer youth programs are important
because they help build self-esteem and make/strengthen friendships while maintaining
a safe environment. Later he stated, When you work at a youth program,
you need to maintain a positive image for the children to model after.
In addition to being
an asset to the AYS family, Tom is also an Eagle Scout. He donated several games
that he made for a Scout project to AYS programs.
