When people think of before and after school programs, they often picture smiling kids playing games, building with LEGOs, or painting a colorful masterpiece. Those moments matter – and they’re real! But what’s harder to see is everything behind the scenes that makes those moments possible.
From ordering art supplies to training staff, quality programs depend on far more than what happens onsite. There’s no warehouse, no dedicated set up team, and no delivery truck for supplies.
Just people who believe that every kid deserves access to the same high-quality, hands-on experience, no matter what school they attend.
Early Morning Impact
Did you know many before school programs start as early as 7:00 am? While most of the building is still quiet, our staff are already inside prepping for the morning ahead.
For many students, our staff are the first adults they see, beside their family members, each day. That first smile and warm “Good morning!” can set the tone for everything that follows.
And it’s not accidental. It’s part of a thoughtful approach designed to help kids feel safe, seen, and ready to learn.
Beyond the Classroom Clock
Long before the final school bell rings, afterschool staff are already in motion.

They arrive early, quietly stepping into the building while classes are still in session. They unpack snacks, set up activity spaces, and review notes on which kids need extra support that day—maybe one has a tough time with transitions, maybe another is still learning to navigate friendships.
By the time dismissal begins, they’re ready—not just with schedules and supplies, but with intention.
They greet each child by name. They notice the one who seems quieter than usual and ask, “How are you doing today?” They celebrate the small wins: a math problem finished, a complete class project, a new friend made.
When a child falls down, they’re there to help them up—bandage in hand and reassurance in their voice. When a child is having a hard day, they offer calm, not criticism. They redirect, they guide, they listen.
This is the kind of impact you can’t always measure, but you can always feel.
The Last to Leave
At 5:00 pm, when many adults are heading home, our team stays.
They remain at the program until the very last child is picked up. Then they tidy the room, take a few notes, and prepare to do it all again tomorrow.
This is what afterschool really looks like. It’s not just extended care—it’s a personal connection with every individual child.
Make the Impact Go Further
With your support, we can help more children experience the care, connection, and consistency that high-quality before and after school programs provide. Every contribution to AYS helps strengthen our programs, support our staff, and ensure that children have what they need to thrive each day.
