The Importance of Summer Break

April showers can bring May flowers, but the week or two of Spring Break is always a reminder that summer is just around the corner. While summer vacation offers children a much-needed break from learning in a classroom setting, it can be challenging for parents to plan for a balanced, enriching, extended break from school without the support of summer programs. At AYS, our team of youth-serving professionals create special, season-centered activities to keep kids in the habit of learning, but we also recognize summer as inherently valuable to their development.

Summer Break allows families to shake out of the same old routine.

It’s easy to become creatures of habit during the school year, and children can thrive and feel comfortable when things are predictable. But too much routine can stifle creativity and allow us to forget what else is possible. Summer break is a chance for kids to reset, recharge, and try something new.

Summer Break is a chance to make connections with new people and new places.

New people bring new challenges, new ways of thinking, and new opportunities for young people to figure out personalities and appropriate boundary-setting. At AYS’ Summer Days camp, students will get to meet new friends and explore different places around the Indianapolis area during field trips that will pique their interest and cue their brains to be ready to learn.

Summer Break is an opportunity to focus on FUN.

Last but certainly not least, summer is a chance for kids to do what they do best – have fun! The day-to-day work and atmosphere in classrooms can be challenging for young students, so having the freedom to explore, create, and play in a safe environment at camp helps them unwind. Not only does AYS have field trips planned for the summer, but we also have weeks’ worth of themed curriculum centered around STEM experiments, social emotional learning projects, and games to keep kids engaged and busy.

AYS is currently registering students for Summer Days camps in Decatur and Washington Township. Come capture the sunshine and positive vibes to help you shine through the summer by signing up today!
