Safe Sitter® Classes at AYS
“The class was a fun experience that gave me a lot of info,” said one former student. Safe Sitter® teaches tools for confidence and success to adolescents who babysit or stay home alone. The course is medically-accurate and designed for adolescents age 11 to 13. Students must be at least 11 years old at the time of the class to participate. The AYS Professional Development Center (PDC) is excited to offer Safe Sitter® to students as they transition from being supervised, to supervising themselves and others, possibly their very first job! To set up a class at your school, church, scout group, etc. a minimum of 6 students is required. Class fee is $55 per student.
Safe Sitter® Course Content:
Safety Skills: Students learn how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies.
Child Care Skills: Students learn tips to manage behavior that will help them stay in control of themselves and the children in their care. Students also learn the ages and stages of child development, as well as practice diapering.
First Aid & Rescue Skills: Learning skills such as choking rescue and CPR is often students’ favorite part of the class. Students also learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses.
Life & Business Skills: The ability to screen jobs, discuss fees, and greet employers will set students up for success now and in the future. Students practice these skills through various role plays.
Although students are taught current American Heart Association CPR skills, CPR certification cards are not part of the Safe Sitter® course. (Students are welcome to register for a separate AHA Heartsaver First Aid or CPR course if that is preferred.) Students receive a Safe Sitter® completion card for successful completion of the course.
