COVID-19 – Cleaning
Cleaning Procedures
Program staff will be responsible for conducting at least three (3) planned cleanings of their program space: Opening cleaning, midday cleaning after AM program or before PM program, and closing cleaning.
Prior to students attending the program, AYS staff will:
- Clean and disinfect desk and chair surfaces
- Wipe off whiteboard or other wall materials
- Clean AYS storage bins and containers
- Clean and disinfect any student storage bin
- Clean and disinfect toys and materials. Each item, due to the type of surface it has, may need to be cleaned and disinfected distinctly. Examples:
- All board game pieces should be wiped off with a clean cloth and, if possible, sprayed with appropriate cleaning supply.
- Markers should have caps and be cleaned and disinfected
- Legos or other manipulatives need cleaned and disinfected
- Balls or other shared items must be cleaned and disinfected
- Door handles must be cleaned and disinfected
- Both the interior and exterior portion
- Door surfaces and frames must be cleaned and disinfected
- Both the interior and exterior portion
- Light switches must be cleaned and disinfected
- Other high touch surfaces must be cleaned and disinfected
During the shift change and/or after AM programming or before PM programming, staff will conduct a midday cleaning of their program space. This includes and is not limited to the following:

At the end of the program day, each program space must be cleaned and sanitized by AYS personnel. During sanitization, staff should, at minimum, do the following:
- Sanitize desk and chair surfaces
- Sanitize whiteboard or other wall materials
- Sanitize AYS storage bins and containers
- Sanitize and disinfect any student storage bin
- Sanitize toys and materials. Each item, due to the type of surface it has, may need to be cleaned and disinfected distinctly. Examples:
- All board game pieces and boxes
- Markers should have caps and bottles both sanitized
- Legos or other manipulatives need sanitized
- Balls or other shared items must be sanitized
- Door handles must be sanitized
- Both the interior and exterior portion
- Door surfaces and frames must be sanitized
- Both the interior and exterior portion
- Light switches must be sanitized
- All touch surfaces must be cleaned and sanitized
Youth Development Leaders are also responsible for working with the identified building partner to finalize a cleaning schedule of communal program spaces. At a minimum, the communal program spaces are to be cleaned, disinfected, or sanitized as follows:
- All areas of entrance and exit must be cleaned and disinfected after each key transition period and sanitized at the end of the program day. This includes:
- Interior and exterior door handles, surfaces, frames, etc.
- Hallway handles
- Surfaces and desks along entrance and exit routes, including any parent table or other surface
- Any elevated stairs or surfaces where children were sitting or waiting
- AYS site staff should identify additional surfaces or areas that are used during key transitions and develop site–specific cleaning protocols as part of their transition plan
- Students should be encouraged to avoid touching these areas and surfaces as much as possible to prevent exposure to communal surfaces
- All communal rooms must be cleaned and disinfected and sanitized at the end of the day. Examples:
- Bathrooms
- Gymnasium
- Office space
- Cafeteria space
- Table cleaning of all food contact surfaces must occur prior to and after consumption of food, as is consistent with AYS policies and best practices outside of COVID-19 specific cleaning requirements
- Any other rooms used
